The Mathematical Technologies family of companies trace their roots back to 1981, with a company named Statistical Consulting Associates, founded by two recognized leaders in the field of applied mathematics, Dr. Stuart Geman and Dr. Donald McClure. The founders provided software and consulting services to the medical research, equipment manufacturing, and defense industries. Out of this work grew the recognition for the potential application of mathematical theory to the industrial automation machine vision market. MTI's first product, MTI Reader, was an optical character recognition (OCR) software solution used to read identification labels and track components in a manufacturing process. MTI Reader became widely recognized as a premier reader for complex OCR tasks in the semiconductor industry. In 2004, MTI sold its industrial automation business to DVT Company of Duluth, GA.

In the mid-1990's MTI expanded into the digital production industry by commercializing theoretical developments in the processing of image sequences between film and digital media. Introduced in 1997 MTI Digital Restoration Services™ offered a breakthrough approach to automate the digital cleaning and restoration of motion pictures which quickly became a quality standard for A-title Hollywood productions. The company followed DRS with the introduction of the IntelliDeck suite of client-server applications for manipulating digital images during film production and film-to-video mastering.
